Project Overview
The Martin Luther King, Jr. Justice Building expands Essex County’s civic and judicial campus in downtown Newark with new space for court operations, county administration, public access, and civic gathering. The building includes offices for the Essex County Clerk, Superintendent of Elections, Board of Elections, Surrogate, and Board of Taxation, along with tax and general equity courtrooms formerly located in the Wilentz Justice Complex on Washington Street.
The project brings together court facilities, county department offices, public gathering spaces, secure operational areas, and campus connections into a single downtown Newark justice building. It required coordination of courtrooms, public circulation, secure operations, envelope systems, and exterior materials that complement the adjacent historic county buildings.
Courtroom + Judicial Spaces
Construction of tax and general equity courtrooms with supporting spaces for modern court operations and secure public use.
County Office Build-Out
Public plazas, a glass pedestrian bridge, and streetscape integration connect the new building with the existing Hall of Records complex.
Civic Identity + Memorial Features
Exterior and interior elements honor Martin Luther King, Jr., including the prominent 22-foot statue and interpretive display features.
