Project Overview
The Carey Gardens project restored and strengthened a NYCHA residential development damaged by the Superstorm Sandy tidal surge. The development includes three 15-story residential towers containing 682 apartments, along with a community facility serving residents through assembly, classroom, and childcare spaces.
The comprehensive recovery and resiliency program included a new elevated central heating plant, backup generators, flood-protection measures, roof and façade repairs, utility upgrades, and site improvements. A new elevated Community Service Center consolidates community programming, childcare, property management, emergency power, and building systems while serving as a command center during severe weather events.
Storm Resiliency
Wet and dry floodproofing, passive entrance barriers, elevated mechanical and electrical systems, and emergency generators strengthen the development against future severe weather events.
Building Infrastructure
New roofing, façade repairs, upgraded utilities, replacement plumbing and electrical systems, and a centralized heating plant restore critical services across the residential buildings.
Community + Site Improvements
A new Community Service Center, restored playgrounds, improved landscaping, site lighting, security systems, stormwater management, and pavement repairs enhance the development for residents.
